OUR WORK ON youth literacy
We are trying to promote literacy in young readers by giving books to financially challenged families. By working with Power!Book Bags of Sutton’s Bay, Michigan, to offer the 60 enrollees in Livonia’s Head Start program the opportunity to receive six brand-new, age-appropriate books throughout the next year.
One of our new Lodge Members who enjoys sewing donated her time to sew 60 bookbags, which were then filled with a notebook, a pack of crayons and a finger puppet in order to promote imaginary play and expression. The children pick out their own bag and books for a total of six times throughout the coming year.
We also were able to purchase a mobile book cart where additional books are stored at the program location for those that are interested in taking additional reading materials.
Our initial visit took place in September at the beginning of the program year and the successive visits will then occur in November and December right before the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. The last three visits will then occur in February, April, and June.
