OUR WORK ON youth literacy

We are trying to promote literacy in young readers by giving books to financially challenged families.   By working with Power!Book Bags of Sutton’s Bay, Michigan, to offer the 60 enrollees in Livonia’s Head Start program the opportunity to receive six brand-new, age-appropriate books throughout the next year.

One of our new Lodge Members who enjoys sewing donated her time to sew 60 bookbags, which were then filled with a notebook, a pack of crayons and a finger puppet in order to promote imaginary play and expression.  The children pick out their own bag and books for a total of six times throughout the coming year.
We also were able to purchase a mobile book cart where additional books are stored at the program location for those that are interested in taking additional reading materials.

Our initial visit took place in September at the beginning of the program year and the successive visits will then occur in November and December right before the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.  The last three visits will then occur in February, April, and June.

our work at the john d. dingell medical center

We are working to make life a bit easier for hospitalized veterans by donating requested personal items and dietician-recommended snacks for veterans at the John Dingell Medical Center.  Among the many departments receiving donations were the Hematology, Cancer, and Psychological wards.

As interest in the program increases, Cyndi Ross, the Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services Representative for the hospital, hopes to develop the relationship between the VA and Elks with additional activities.  If you are an Elk and interested in helping, please contact her through the Livonia Lodge at (734) 435-2246.

OUR HELP WITH ELIMINATING VET HOMELESSNESS

Livonia Lodge was able to make a donation that helped with operating expenses at Vets Returning Home, a Roseville non-profit whose focus is re-integrating homeless veterans into society not only by housing them, but by providing a number of services (employment readiness training, aid with job placement, disability benefit connection, legal support and life skills training) to help with the transition.

In the future we hope to continue to develop our relationship with this very worthwhile cause.
